Privacy Notice
Last updated: October 13, 2026
This notice explains what information DictoChat collects when you use the website, web app and the DictoChat Lookup browser extension (the "Service"), why we use it and the choices you have. We keep it to what is needed to run the Service. We do not sell your personal information and we do not show ads.
1. Using DictoChat without an account
The dictionary, grammar library and study tools work without signing in. Your bookmarks, study progress and settings are stored on your own device and are not sent to us. In the web app, dictionary searches are sent to our servers and are only rate limited, not linked to you.
2. Information we collect with an account
- Account details: your email address, a securely hashed password, and sign-in session information.
- Synced study data: bookmarks, saved words, study progress, chat history and chat settings. When you are signed in this is synced to a database created for your account so it follows you between devices.
- Credits and purchases: your credit balance, a record of credits granted and spent, your plan, and the customer and subscription identifiers from our payment provider.
- AI requests: the content you send to AI features, described in the next section.
3. AI features and your content
When you use chat, voice practice, photo scan or the AI dictionary, the content of that request is sent to Google's Gemini AI services to generate a reply. This can include:
- your chat messages and recent conversation turns, together with your chosen language, level and style settings;
- photos you scan, so the text in them can be read;
- audio from a voice session, streamed while the session is active;
- words you look up that are not in the offline dictionary.
Our servers pass these requests on and do not keep a copy of your photos or voice audio. Chat history is kept only on your device and in your synced account data. Google processes the content under its own terms and privacy policy. Please do not send sensitive personal information through these features.
4. Payments
Purchases are handled by Polar, the merchant of record. Polar collects your payment details and billing information directly. We never see or store your full card number. We receive confirmation of the purchase and Polar's customer and subscription identifiers, so we can add credits and manage your plan. Polar's use of your data is described in its own privacy notice.
5. Email
We use your email address to verify your account, reset your password and send essential service messages. Verification emails are sent through Cloudflare's email service. We do not send marketing email.
6. Website
When you visit dictochat.com, our host (Cloudflare) sees your IP address and approximate country. We use the country only to choose a default page language (Japanese in Japan, English elsewhere) and do not store it. If you pick a language with the toggle, your choice is saved in your browser's local storage. We do not use advertising or analytics cookies.
7. Browser extension
DictoChat Lookup is a Chrome extension that shows dictionary definitions for words you highlight on other websites. It reads only the text you highlight, and it does nothing on a page until you highlight something.
- Highlighted words: when you highlight a single word, that word and the dictionary language you chose are sent to our servers to look up its definition. If the offline dictionary does not have the word and you are signed in, the word is sent to the AI lookup described in section 3.
- Sign-in: your email address and password are sent to our sign-in service. The extension keeps a session token, your email address, your plan and your language choices in the extension storage on your device. It does not store your password.
- Saved words: when you choose Save, the word, its reading, the meaning shown and its language are added to your DictoChat bookmarks. Saving needs a paid plan, because bookmarks sync through your account.
- Other data: the extension does not read your browsing history, other tabs or page content beyond the text you highlight, and we do not sell or share extension data for advertising.
Uninstalling the extension removes its session token and settings from your browser. Saved words stay in your DictoChat account until you delete them.
8. Who we share data with
- Cloudflare: hosting, databases and email delivery.
- Google: AI processing for chat, voice, scan and AI dictionary requests.
- Polar: payments, taxes and invoicing.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it. These providers may process data in countries other than your own.
9. How long we keep data
We keep account and synced data while your account is open. When you delete your account in Settings, your synced database is removed. Payment records may be kept by Polar and by us for as long as tax, accounting or legal rules require.
10. Your choices and rights
- You can delete your account and synced data at any time from Settings in the app.
- You can ask us to access, correct, export or delete your personal information, or to object to how we use it.
- Depending on where you live, you may also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.
