Terms of Service

These terms apply to your use of DictoChat, including the website at dictochat.com and the web app at app.dictochat.com (together, the "Service"). By creating an account or using the Service you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.

1. The Service

DictoChat is a language learning tool with an offline dictionary, grammar library, spaced-repetition study, photo scan, and an AI conversation partner with text and voice chat. The dictionary, grammar and study tools can be used without an account. AI features need a free account and credits.

2. Your account

• You must provide a valid email address and keep your password secure. You are responsible for activity on your account.
• You must be at least 16 years old, or have permission from a parent or guardian, to create an account.
• You can delete your account at any time from Settings in the app. Deleting it removes your synced data and any remaining credits, and cancels any paid subscription immediately without a refund.

3. Credits, plans and payments

• AI features use credits. The current cost of each action is shown in the app.
• Credits are granted monthly with a paid plan (Learner, Pro or Intensive), and a free account gets a one-time grant when it is created. Credits have no cash value and cannot be transferred or exchanged for money.
• Paid plans are subscriptions that renew monthly until you cancel. You can cancel at any time and keep your plan until the end of the period you have paid for.
• Payments are processed by our payment provider, Polar, who acts as the merchant of record and handles taxes and invoicing. Prices are shown at checkout and can change for future purchases.
• Refunds are covered by our Refund Policy.

4. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

• break the law, or use the Service to harass, threaten or harm others;
• attempt to access other users' data, probe or disrupt the Service, or bypass rate limits or credit charges;
• scrape, copy or resell the dictionary data or other content in bulk through the Service;
• use automated means to create accounts or send AI requests;
• upload photos or text that you have no right to use, or that contain unlawful content.

We may suspend or close accounts that break these rules.

5. AI features

The conversation partner, corrections, scan and AI dictionary are generated by AI models. They can make mistakes, including incorrect translations, grammar explanations or corrections. Use them as a study aid and check anything important against other sources. Do not share sensitive personal information in chat.

6. Your content

You keep ownership of the messages, photos, bookmarks and other content you provide. You give us permission to process and store it only as needed to run the Service for you, including sending it to the AI providers described in our Privacy Notice.

7. Our content and open data

The DictoChat name, logo, app and website design belong to us. Dictionary and example data come from open projects (JMdict, KANJIDIC2, Kanjium, Tatoeba, Wiktionary, EJDict-hand and FrequencyWords) under their own licences, which are credited in the app. Those licences continue to apply to that data.

8. Availability and changes

We work to keep the Service running but do not promise it will always be available or error free. We may change, add or remove features. Offline dictionary use does not need a connection, but AI features, sync and purchases do.

9. Disclaimer and liability

The Service is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind, to the extent the law allows. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, and our total liability for any claim relating to the Service is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer law that cannot be waived.

10. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. If a change is significant we will tell you in the app or by email. Continuing to use the Service after a change means you accept the new terms.
